Flexible internal funding is available to support faculty-driven partnerships, scholarly mobility, and international exploration. Projects seeded through our mechanisms have gone on to secure major external grants, yield publications in top journals, and produce field-defining research in collaboration with leading scholars, artists and practitioners from around the world.
The PGFA program provides annual cost-reimbursable awards of up to $30,000 for faculty pursuing international research partnerships in key regions. Awards are available for projects in Mainland China, India and South Asia, Hong Kong and East Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Sub-Saharan Africa. Open to all UChicago faculty and academic appointees across all schools, divisions, and fields of discipline.
Through the UChicago-CNRS International Research Center for Fundamental Scientific Discovery, UChicago faculty can access several funding mechanisms supporting joint research with CNRS-affiliated scholars, including the PhD Joint Research Program, International Research Laboratories, and CNRS international cooperation mechanisms such as International Research Projects and Networks.
UChicago Global offers travel grants of up to $3,000 for PhD students conducting field or archival research in one of five target regions: Mainland China, East Asia, South Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Latin America and the Caribbean.
The UChicago-Berlin University Alliance Workshop Grants support collaborative workshops between UChicago faculty and scholars from the Berlin University Alliance. BUA provides administrative support, venue, and meal costs; UChicago Global supports travel funding for UChicago investigators and students.
UChicago Global and Lund University jointly offer seed funding for early-stage research and education collaborations between UChicago and Lund faculty. Projects span all disciplines and are intended to establish new partnerships, identify shared research priorities, and lay the groundwork for future joint funding applications.
Housed within the University of Chicago John W. Boyer Center in Paris, the International Institute of Research in Paris (IIRP) offers up to $15,000 for one-year projects and requests of up to $30,000 for two-year projects.
