The Chicago Center for Contemporary Theory (3CT) was created in 2004 by a group of seven faculty members from Anthropology, English, History, and Political Science. In our seventh year, the center continues to promote sustained comparative, interdisciplinary discussion of social processes and political practices in the contemporary world. Drawing inspiration from our successful eponymous lecture series, Theorizing the Present comprises a set of focused modules motivated by cutting edge research goals and experimental pedagogies which will address such pressing questions as: 1.
The Chicago Center on Democracy provides a space for both normative and empirical researchers to share, discuss, and refine their work on issues related to democracy. We share this academic work with the broader community of citizens, civil society organizations, and policymakers. We do this through convenings, publications, and public engagement.
Chicago House, the Oriental Institute headquarters in Egypt, functions as a major center of Egyptological studies for Egyptian and foreign scholars alike, and is open from October 15 through April 15 every winter season. The research library, among the finest in Egypt, has more than 20,000 volumes. The Chicago House photographic archive is a major research collection containing over 21,000 negatives and 21,000 prints ranging in date from the late-nineteenth century to the present.
The Chicago Project on Security & Threats (CPOST) is an international security affairs research institute based at the University of Chicago. Founded in 2004 by Robert Pape, Professor of Political Science at the University of Chicago, CPOST is best known for creating and maintaining the most comprehensive and transparent suicide attack database available.
The focus of the Committee on Southern Asian Studies (COSAS), which is supported through a University endowment, is to support and implement faculty and student academic and research projects that broadly encompass the study of South and Southeast Asia.
Many of the greatest energy challenges today are not in the United States, but in places like India and China. That’s why the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago (EPIC) made conducting research in these vital countries one of their organizing missions. The institute started by putting people on the ground in India, creating EPIC-India in 2014 in order to confront this challenge through cutting-edge research and targeted engagement with local stakeholders.
Founded in 2010, HCEO is a network of over 500 global scholars, educators and policy makers focused on human capital development and its impact on opportunity inequality. HCEO’s unique approach enables collaboration among academics with varying disciplines, approaches, perspectives and fields. HCEO integrates biological, sociological, and psychological perspectives into traditionally economic questions. The result is innovative thinking and approaches to inequality and human capital development research.
The Institute for Population and Precision Health brings together researchers from multiple academic units across University of Chicago, and provides them with population-based resources to tackle the most challenging biological, behavioral, and economic problems in preventive and population medicine. The University’s excellence across these disciplines provides an interdisciplinary Institute that has the capacity to focus its collective expertise on population and precision health research.
The Institute was founded with the mission of uniting scholars from a variety of fields to study the process of knowledge formation and transmittal from antiquity to the present day and, in correlation, to explore how this history shapes the modern world.
In 1983, with generous support from Dorothy J. MacLean and the MacLean family, the University of Chicago established the nation’s first program devoted to clinical medical ethics. Dr. Mark Siegler was appointed its founding director. The MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics was pivotal in establishing and expanding the field of clinical medical ethics.
