The CNRS-University of Chicago International Research Center for Fundamental Scientific Discovery (IRC Discovery) hosted visitors from the European Commission’s Directorate General for Research and Innovation on September 27 for a discussion about opportunities for engagement with European research funding mechanisms and mobility programs.

The European Union’s Horizon Europe program funds research and innovation with a budget of €95.5B over seven years. While focused on supporting European priorities and policies, it encourages and supports collaboration between European and international partners towards these goals.

As the University of Chicago’s engagement with the European research community expands – through the recent establishment of the IRC Discovery, the upcoming expansion of the Center in Paris, and other mechanisms – it is increasingly important to facilitate seamless connections between UChicago and European researchers and connect them to mechanisms for research funding and mobility.

Maria Cristina Russo, Director for Global Approach and International Cooperation in Research and Innovation, spoke on the European Union’s global approach to cooperation in research and innovation, which prioritizes collaboration across Europe and beyond to bring together the best minds to tackle important scientific and societal challenges. Mary Kavanagh, Senior Expert in the Directorate for Global Approach and International Cooperation, gave an in-depth overview of the EU’s framework program for research and innovation, Horizon Europe and noted opportunities for UChicago to engage with European partners through these mechanisms.

Later, Professor Savdeep Sethi of the Department of Physics spoke to his experience in hosting a recipient of a Postdoctoral Fellowship from the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, which was not only beneficial to Professor Sethi’s lab but increased the department’s connectivity with the European scientific network and introduced a greater diversity of scientific perspectives to their research.
