Professor Dipesh Chakrabarty recently accepted an invitation to extend his tenure as faculty director of the University of Chicago Center in Delhi and chair of the Delhi Faculty Steering Committee through June 30, 2023. He has served in this role since 2018 and has been deeply involved with the Center in Delhi since its conception.

Professor Chakrabarty is currently the Lawrence A. Kimpton Distinguished Service Professor in History, South Asian Languages and Civilizations, and the College. He is a faculty fellow of the Chicago Center for Contemporary Theory, an associate of the Department of English, and by courtesy, a faculty member in the Law School. Professor Chakrabarty’s research interests are in modern South Asian history and historiography, in postcolonial theory and its impact on history-writing, and in comparative studies of questions and politics of modernity. His most recent book is The Climate of History in a Planetary Age (2021, The University of Chicago Press), and he is currently working on two long-term projects: one on democracy and political thought in South Asia and the other on a cultural history of Muslim-Bengali nationalism.
