Neubauer Family Assistant Professor, Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering
Joint Appointee, Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division, Argonne National Laboratory

Chibueze Amanchukwu’s research focuses on energy storage and electrocatalytic devices. His team combines data science, first-principles calculations, chemical synthesis, and novel characterization tools to improve energy density, stability, and affordability in next-generation batteries and electrocatalytic devices. It is his hope that with more efficient batteries, he and his team can help address issues stemming from climate change

Chibueze recently organized the first US-Nigeria Engineering PhD workshop in October 2020, which focused on equipping Nigerian undergraduates to apply successfully to engineering PhD programs in the US. Having grown up in Nigeria himself, he understands that many American higher education institutions do not understand the African educational system, and resources and mentors to help African students navigate the US educational system are limited. In future years, he intends to expand the workshop and add an in-person research experience component.

Q: Why is international collaboration important in your field?

A: Climate change will affect us all, and brilliant scientists/engineers worldwide are required to help solve these challenges.

Q: How has your work with international partners been beneficial to you and your career, personally?

A: It has allowed me to significantly grow my network and broadened the type of research questions we tackle in my group. My international work has also led to great friendships.
