Associate Professor of Neurology and Surgery
Fernando Goldenberg, MD, FNCS, is a specialist in critical care medicine with sub-specialization in neurocritical care. His current investigations focus on traumatic brain injury, intracranial hypertension, brain death, prognostication after hypoxic-ischemic brain injury and use of advanced imaging in acute neurological conditions. He also specializes in the management of critically ill patients with brain tumors, cerebral edema, status epilepticus, as well as patients with severe Guillain-Barre syndrome and respiratory failure associated with myasthenia gravis.
A native of Argentina, Dr. Goldenberg has engaged with international communities to spread awareness about stroke and brain injury treatment. Recently, he has worked with partners in Argentina to develop a neurocritical care and stroke education initiative for South American doctors and nurses. He has also developed an experimental animal model of intracranial hypertension together with Argentinean researchers. Another upcoming project will examine variations in the diagnosis of brain death in different countries, which impacts organ donation outcomes.
Q: Why is international collaboration important in your field?
A: Variations in standard medical practices among different countries provide opportunities to learn more about natural history of certain diseases, as well as their prognosis and outcomes. In the current globalized world we live in, it seems like a no-brainer to search for, identify, and engage scientific talents beyond our own frontiers to promote international collaborations.
Q: What has interested or surprised you most in building your international collaborations?
A: The universalization of passion and genuine interest for scientific discovery.
