Paul Sereno

Man sitting next to dinosaur heads

Professor, Department of Organismal Biology & Anatomy & Committee on Evolutionary Biology

Paul Sereno has led scores of expeditions resulting in monumental discoveries on four continents. His paleontological quests have unearthed the earliest dinosaurs Eoraptor and Eodromaeus in Argentina, the meat-eating dinosaur Rajasaurus in India, a herd of birdlike dinosaurs in China, and a new plant-eating dinosaur in Tibet. Sereno’s expeditions to the Sahara Desert in Morocco and Niger unearthed scores of new dinosaurs and crocodiles, including the world largest crocodile, Sarcosuchus, as well as the an enormous archaeological site and graveyard of fossil humans predating the pyramids. Sereno founded NigerHeritage, an international effort to preserve and celebrate the world-class paleontological, archaeological, and cultural heritage of the Republic of Niger. Conferences in Niger and Chicago have brought together government officials, urban designers, architects, museologists and experts who have laid plans for an energy efficient museum pavilion in the capital (Niamey) and a landmark cultural center in the desert oasis Agadez at the crossroads of the Sahara.
