The University of Chicago is home to world-renowned academic area studies centers dating back to the Committee on Southern Asian Studies, established in 1956. Today, the University continues to prioritize rigorous inquiry into and awareness of the cultures, issues, and questions pertaining to key regions around the world. Currently, the Centers for East Asian Studies, East European and Russian/Eurasian Studies, and Middle Eastern Studies are designated as U.S. Department of Education Title VI National Resource Centers (NRC) and have historically received annual funding from the Department of Education to serve the country’s demand for area-specific teaching and research, including the administration of Foreign Language and Area Studies fellowships (FLAS).
