Since 2010, researchers from UChicago and Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais have collaborated on projects addressing regional disparities and spatial economic models in Brazil related to topics in healthcare, property tax estimation, and housing market research.
Prof. Juliano Saccomani is currently working on a project to develop virtual-reality-enabled materials to be used in Portuguese and Spanish classes at UChicago.
A research project led by Prof. Maanasa Raghavan and Dr. Constanza de la Fuente examines the problematics of genomics and identity in Chile. While acknowledging that increased access to genomic technologies and improvements to sampling diversity have led to progress in the field, the team notes that research of Indigenous peoples has often been done on rather than with or for them. They emphasize the need for research practices in academia to empower Indigenous communities in research settings, rather than relying on the goodwill of the researchers or expecting academic institutions to make amends.
Mari Carmen Ramírez helps put Latin American art on the map. As the Wortham Curator of Latin American Art at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Ramirez has built one of the top collections of Latin American art in the world.
